Harrop, prominent Kent County physician, dead at 81 Daniel S. Harrop Jr., M.D. NAPLES, Fla. -- Daniel S. Harrop Jr, M.D., formerly of Spencer Street, West Warwick, a physician for more than 50 years, died Saturday at North Collier Community Hospital. He was the husband of Dorothy J. (Hickey) Harrop. Born March 31, 1921, in West Warwick, he was a son of the late Daniel S. Harrop Sr., M.D., and Edith (Kester) Harrop, and stepson of the late Alice (Shields) Harrop, his guardian after the death of his parents. He practiced medicine for 42 years in the house in which he was born. He also was a summer resident of Narragansett. He attended St. James Parochial School in Arctic, and although he was orphaned while in high school, he went on to graduate from LaSalle Academy and Providence College. Dr. Harrop then entered the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where he obtained his medical degree in 1946. Originally, he hadn't intended to follow in his father and oldest brother's footsteps, opting instead to become an engineer, but a local school administrator who had known his father convinced him to pursue medicine. He interned at Rhode Island Hospital and did postgraduate training in specialized physical diagnosis techniques at the University of Vienna in Austria. He was a captain in the Army Medical Corps just after the end of World War II and was responsible for the design of a number of U.S. military cemeteries in France. After returning to the United States, he took a staff position at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Providence, where he met his future wife who was a secretary there. After several years, he set up his own private practice and had a solo practice until his retirement in 1989. Dr. Harrop was a traditional general practitioner who did house calls, saw both adults and children, delivered babies and did minor surgery. He felt his soft-spoken, contemplative way and his patient listening skills were a gift from his Mennonite heritage and Quaker mother. He was a member of the staff of Kent County Memorial Hospital where he served as the chairman of the Department of Family Practice. He was the past president of the Kent County Medical Society and the R.I. Academy of Family Physicians. He was a life member of the American Academy of Family Practice, the American Medical Association and the R.I. Medical Society. He served as an assistant state medical examiner in the Kent County area for 20 years, as town health officer for West Greenwich for 25 years, and as the first director of Health Services at the Community College of Rhode Island for 15 years. Upon his retirement, the General Assembly presented him with a citation "in recognition of your personal attention and devotion to the health care of your patients." Dr. Harrop had several distinguished Revolutionary War patriots as ancestors, including David Rittenhouse, the first director of the U.S. Mint, and could claim membership in numerous hereditary societies. Intrigued by family stories of his grandfather's brother, a Civil War casualty in the Battle of Malvern Hill, leading to the Battle of Gettysburg, he became a Civil War buff, visited Gettysburg on several occasions and had a significant collection of Civil War memorabilia. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 62 years, with the Rev. James P. Gibson Council 181, in Clyde and most recently St. William's Council in Florida, and a member of the Father Wallace Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Proud of his Irish heritage he received through his father, he was a past president of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of the Pawtuxet Valley and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a member of American Legion Post 2 in West Warwick, the Pawtuxet Valley Preservation and Historical Society, Providence College Alumni Association, the Alumni Association of Thomas Jefferson University, the Galilee Beach Club, Narragansett, and the Club at Olde Cypress and the Edgewater Hotel Beach Club, both of Naples. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church in Naples. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Daniel S. Harrop III, M.D., of Providence, and Kevin R. Harrop of East Greenwich; three daughters, Pamela A. Harrop, M.D., of Rumford, Deborah J. Harrop and Susan E. James, both of Naples; a brother, James Harrop, M.D., of Avon, Conn.; a sister, Mary Flynn, Ph. D., of West Warwick; and six grandchildren.
